Unofficial Program Discussion

Y'all,

We've just nominated our first presidential slate (yay, us!) ... but we have a convention coming up in October to consider bylaws amendments and program ratification.

Because of the unusual situation obtaining earlier this year, bylaws and program committees have not yet, to my knowledge, been appointed. I expect that will probably happen shortly, but there's no reason we as members can't toss around some proposals (as a matter of fact, member-sponsored proposals get voted on at the convention, after bylaws committee proposals do). Doing so might even help the national committee in selecting a program committee!

The guidelines for the program are pretty simple: "The program shall consist of no more than five specific policy recommendations relevant to the election cycle for which it is adopted."

Stylistically, I hope that proposals will be in one- or two-sentence format, and I take "specific" to mean "dealing with only one discrete issue." In other words, "The Boston Tea Party calls for world peace, gun rights, paper ballots in all elections, a return to the gold standard and pistachio ice cream for all" is probably over-broad in scope.

So, post'em if you got'em. And, just as those who can't do, teach, if you don't got any, well, CRITICIZE some!

Rough proposal (help me polish it up before the convention!):

"The Boston Tea Party supports a constitutional amendment a) repealing section 4 of the 14th amendment; b) prohibiting future indebtedness and deficit spending on the part of the federal government; and c) repudiating all federal government debt and debt service obligations accrued prior to the ratification of said amendment."

That should seal the deal as far as the dollar collapse goes. Interesting times.

Keep in mind that the guidelines for the program could be changed by changing the bylaws. This bylaws change thread might be of some use: http://bostontea.us/node/128

And I think there are other bylaws change threads. Someday, I'm gonna get ambitious and combine threads.

There are other considerations. We have a platform, which is short and sweet, and, I think, ought to stay that way. We have a program, which is not as short, but still very terse compared to other parties.

There is nothing to prevent us from having an "Action Plan" or a "Presidential Candidate's Plan" and a "Vice Presidential Candidate's Plan" to get more detailed and more specific. It is your party, members, so don't feel constrained by bylaws limiting the size and scope of the "program."

There is an existing thread with quite a few ideas.

I kinda like some of GE's thoughts, but I think he left in a huff.
