Resolution to Oppose Obama's Backpedaling of Iraq War

The following resolution was passed by the Boston Tea Party National Committee on March 20, 2009 with a vote of 4-0 and one member not voting.

Whereas, President Barack Obama has backpedaled on the war, even though he promised to end the conflict by bringing the U.S. troops home safely and ending all military operations;

Whereas, President Obama, in an appearance before military troops at Camp Lejune on February 27, declared that the "combat mission in Iraq will end" on August 31, 2010;

Whereas, 68 occupation troops in Iraq have died since President Obama was elected and sworn into office;

Whereas, the President says that the U.S. will "retain a transitional force" carrying out 3 distinct functions - there will be "training, equipping, and advising Iraqi Security Forces as long as they remain non-sectarian," there will be "conducting targeted counter-terrorism missions," and the U.S. will be "protecting [its] ongoing civilian and military efforts within Iraq";

Whereas, the U.S.'s "force will likely be made up of 35-50,000 U.S. troops" who will remain on Iraqi soil for an indefinite period of time; and

Whereas, President Back Obama has committed to deploying 17,000 U.S. troops from Iraq to Afhganistan in a highly-publicized, propagandized effort to fight a new war on that country's soil, then

Be it resolved that the Boston Tea National Committee opposes, denounces, and repudiates the President's broken promise to end the war in Iraq, including his intention to shift 17,000 troops from Iraq to Afghanistan and to keep 35,000 to 50,000 American troops in an ongoing effort to keep the combat operations intact.
