Giving Government Back to the Governed

As many of you know, I am NO stranger to the political arena. I'm a strong advocate for Libertarian principles and ideas. This means I believe that everyone has the right to do as they please without government intervention; so long as they hurt no one. For many years I've toyed with the idea of running for a political office. What would I run for? What would my campaign slogan be? What would I do to win? Eventually though, I lost the desire to run for political office. My desire to run, like that of many others, had become more about winning than about the people.
As a Libertarian, I am a staunch advocate for change. I oppose "Big Brother" style government. I support same-sex marriage. I do not condemn abortion. All of these ideas are very radical according to today's standards.

Today's politicians give more and more control to the federal government. (Remember, "A government big enough to give you everything you have, is big enough to take it all away.") As we see this shift of power, (from voter to Congress) we see a DRASTIC demise of your rights as an American citizen. Your right to keep and bear arms, your right to practice any religion or no religion, your right to view any content you choose all have been limited by the government.

As some of you know I'm a staunch supporter of same-sex marriage. I proposed the BP Resolution on same-sex marriage. Many of today's politicians allow their beliefs to cloud their ethics. Instead of saying, "I placed my hand upon the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution." they seem to say, "I placed my hand upon the Constitution and swore to uphold the Bible." Don't get me wrong, I believe that your freedom to practice your religion should never be infringed upon. However, someone's right to practice love, respect, admiration; someone's right to share their life with their lover; someone's right to be who they are should NEVER be trumped by someone's beliefs.

As politicians shift the balance of power away from you they must distract you. (Who can steal something when they're being watched?) We are constantly bombarded with images of hatred, violence, prejudice and fear. After these graven images are shown, our Congressman comes on Television to tell us why we NEED the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act to take away our liberties so that we can feel safe. Well, as Benjamin Franklin once put it, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Sadly this is no longer the agenda of either major political party. The Republican Party has become obsessed with creating larger governments. (That's right. The party that can't govern wants more government.) The Democratic Party has created a false idea of the Constitution. Neither party deserves control. But to start, we need a politician who focuses on their constituents. We need a politician who reads the bills they vote on. We need a politician who votes.

After taking these things into consideration, running for office seems like something I MUST do. As an American, and as a human being, I have no choice but to defend the rights of my brethren. I must support those who cannot support themselves. I must ensure that "Big Brother" allows "Little Brother" to be free. But let's hope we don't have to wait around for me to become this politician. We don't need change. We need help.
